In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s short story, The Adventure of the Dancing Men, Sherlock Holmes makes a pertinent remark, “What one man can invent, another can discover.” How apt Holmes’ remark is for smartphone cameras. While it was invented much earlier, it’s Google that in its relatively short history has actually discovered it with the Pixel smartphones.
Being a tech behemoth, the smartphone business isn’t really the bread and butter for Google but kind of a dessert. Perhaps that’s why we don’t see them racking up impressive sales figures but they are always a part of the smartphone discussions. Why? Firstly, Pixel smartphones have always been considered as an ‘ideal’ Android smartphone, powered by everything-Google. Secondly, because of their camera performance.

With the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones, Google has a more powerful offering in terms of software and hardware. But they come at a premium. You get the Pixel 3XL in two iterations based on 64GB and 128GB, priced at Rs 83,000 and Rs 92,000 respectively. These are interestingly the same prices Google launched its Pixel 2XL at. While this is good news for hardcore Google fans, it still may not be the choice for the masses. We have been using the Google Pixel 3XL for more than a week and the smartphone has shined in some areas but has some caveats as well. Here’s our review.
